For many years now Paul Smith has been working to try and keep crime down in Hall Green. First it was through Neighbourhood watch, his wife Paula is a coordinator, then as part of a team called Kings Heath and District Neighbourhood Watch Association which was origionally set up by Billesley Police station which brought NW Coordinators together in order to assist Police in reducing the fear of crime.
KH&DNWA has become very popular and they do regular events to support the Police, they sell not for profit articles of home and personal security goods which for a few pounds bring a sense of security and wellbeing. From Prikka stick which for a pound a strip you can secure your garden fence to a back door hanger alarm which the alarm goes of should someone attempt to touch your back door. Paul attends the events in order to give out sensible advice on making your home secure.
A new iniative from the Police is Street Watch, which is the equivelant of Neighbourhood watch but on the move. Paul has become the coordinator for Hall Green North and has at present eight volunteers in his team, they are all insured via the Police, go patrolling in high Vis jackets with the West Midlands Police logo to identify them. They log in the details of where and when they will be on patrol and so far it has been a wonderful success. They are additional eyes and ears for the Police and give out advice to those in need. They have succeeded in alerting people to windows and door left open, leaving car doors open and handbags left on seats, all so easy for the opportunist thief to take a chance. Information relayed back is that the Police are seeing it as a great success. We hope that eventually all of Hall Green will have these teams of volunteers available and in situ.
Part of the news that we receive from Stechford Police Station is updates as to the crime stats for the LPU which follow:
Across Birmingham East LPU as of March 27th 2012 there have been 3753 fewer victims of crime,
615 fewer victims of vehicle crime
838 Fewer victims of House burglary
77 fewer victims of most serious violence
218 Fewer victims of business crime
Crime levels overall are now lower than any time since 2002. That is the year when crime recording began. This shows that the way the Police are working is having a massive impact on crime.
Paul is proud to be doing the voluntary work he is doing and will continue to support the Police in anyway he can.
